TND

The recent surge of interest over the issues of community planning and the prevention of sprawl has resulted in the New Urbanism and Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND). The term TND has more recently been used to refer to Traditional Neighborhood Design.  One can visit any number of web sites which ultimately concede that the primary emphasis of these design philosophies and strategies is to reinvent the complex dynamics any given community as a diverse environment of mixed uses that are pedestrian friendly.

TND Engineering, with the support of White Mountain Survey, Inc., specializes in providing innovative solutions to the traffic engineering problems particular to these types of revitalized communities. More specifically, they specialize in "creating streets as public places where it feels good to be a pedestrian while at the same time providing the other necessary functions of the street".

Mr. Chellman, the principle of TND Engineering, with the help of engineers from our staff have provided solutions to the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board; Blount Cultural Park in Montgomery, AL; and various other projects.

The ITE has published its recommended practice for TND Street Design Guidelines. Chester Chellman is the principle author of this important document and information on acquiring a copy is available through the ITE from their book store web page. Use the term Street Design Guidelines in their search engine.

Mr. Chellman has developed an in-house, Traffic Calming Toolkit (TCT), which is a set of strategies which can be applied to streets individually or together to effect change for the benefit of pedestrians, non-motor vehicles, and the motor vehicles as well. Included in the Toolkit are explanations of speed humps, constrictions and neck-downs, and environmental changes. We have the TCT available as a Macromedia Director presentation, as well as in paper form developed in AutoCAD and other applications. To find out more about the TCT as well as other papers prepared by Mr. Chellman, contact him directly at 603-539-5999 or by email.
